Guidance on finding student accommodation in Germany, covering dorms, private housing, lease agreements, and avoiding scams.

Finding a place to live in Germany can be competitive, especially in big cities. However, knowing where and how to search—and understanding tenant rights—can make your housing journey much smoother.

Types of Housing Options

Student Dormitories (Wohnheime): Managed by Studentenwerk; affordable but in high demand
Shared Apartments (WG – Wohngemeinschaften): Popular among students and young professionals
Private Rentals (1-2 Zimmer Wohnung): More privacy but costlier
Temporary/Serviced Housing: Ideal for short stays (e.g., Wunderflats, Spotahome)

Best Websites for House-Hunting

WG-Gesucht.de: Most popular for shared flats and short-term rooms
Immobilienscout24.de: For private rentals and furnished options
Studierendenwerk: City-specific housing for students
Facebook Groups & eBay Kleinanzeigen: Good for informal listings

Documents You Need

Copy of passport/visa
Proof of income or blocked account
SCHUFA report (credit check, mostly for long-term rentals)
Mietschuldenfreiheitsbescheinigung (confirmation of no previous rent debts)

Have digital and printed copies ready, and be proactive in follow-ups.

Rent, Deposits, and Rules

Expect to pay 1–3 months' rent as a deposit
Rent is often listed as Kaltmiete (cold rent) + Nebenkosten (utilities)
Contracts usually require three months’ notice for cancellation
Subletting without permission is often not allowed

Be wary of scams—never pay before seeing the apartment or signing a contract.
